If I had the power to change something, I would change homophobia. (Figures, that for my first deviantion, I would pick such a volitile subject. But it's one I feel strongly about. Moving on...) Love is love, and it shouldn't matter whether it's love between a male and female, a male and male, or a female and female. The heart cannot choose who it loves. Therefore, if one were to love someone of the same gender, they cannot force themselves out of love, any more than anyone can force themselves into love.
People argue against this by saying that "same-sex couples are more likely to be abusive" and such. I disagree with this statement. Each individual has their own problems to deal with, and being gay doesn't necessarily have to do with it.
I'm not saying you must accept gays. I can't force my opinions on you. But I'd like for the world to stop fighting against them. Stop trying to hurt them. It's just terrible.
Recently, a young man by the name of Jamey committed suicide after his classmates ridiculed him for being bisexual.
He was 14.
No one deserves that. Fighting homophobia isn't just about fighting for gay rights. It can also be seen as a fight for life and death. If Jamey hadn't been taunted, he'd likely still be here with us today.
Just, for a minute, think of Jamey. If he had grown up, maybe he could've found the cure for cancer. Been the president. Saved other peoples' lives. But now he'll never get a chance. All because some people were too narrow-minded to realize that they were hurting a fellow human being.
Now, some people argue that "it's not in the Bible, it's unethical," etc. But, the Bible doesn't mention everything in the world. In fact, the Bible states "Behold, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God." (1 John 4:7) Do not homosexuals love? And would that not make them born of God, and knowing God? God created man in his own image, and God does not make mistakes.
Still others argue "God made male and female to love each other, not male and male or female and female." Does this mean that homosexuals were not made by God? But then, those people who believe that, didn't God make each and every one of us?
Some say "if being gay were a good thing, wouldn't the Pope make a statement on it, saying it's good?" Well, the Pope is a busy man indeed. Besides, even if he did make a statement regarding it, would you comply immediately and without question? Perhaps God put homosexuals on the face of the Earth for that reason, to tell the world that gay is okay.
Maybe I haven't changed your mind. Maybe you're still set in your ways.
But hopefully I made you at least think. Maybe your opinions changed. Maybe.
Maybe now it's time for a change.
"Begin a 500-word piece with 'If I had the power to change something, I would change...'"
And here we are.
I could've written more, seeing as this is a good topic for me, but I had a cap at 500.
